Why detection matters more in Alaska

Alaska law: what’s required

Alaska law (statute AS 18.70.095) sets clear requirements:

  • Smoke detection devices are required in all dwelling units in the state, of a type and installed in a manner approved by the State Fire Marshal.
  • Carbon monoxide detection devices are required in “qualifying dwelling units,” which the law defines as any dwelling that contains or is served by a carbon-based fuel-burning appliance, has an attached garage or carport, or is adjacent to a parking space. CO devices must have an alarm and be installed and maintained per the manufacturer’s instructions.

In plain terms: nearly every Mat-Su home needs both. If you heat with oil, gas, or wood, or have an attached garage, you’re a qualifying dwelling that needs CO protection.

Where detectors should go

Placement is what makes detectors effective. Following standard fire-safety guidance, smoke alarms should be installed:

  • Inside every bedroom.
  • Outside each sleeping area.
  • On every level of the home, including the basement.

Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed outside sleeping areas and on each level as well. And the single biggest upgrade you can make is interconnection, so that when one alarm senses danger, they all sound at once, giving everyone in the house time to get out no matter where the threat starts.

Hardwired and interconnected vs. battery

There are two basic approaches:

  • Hardwired, interconnected alarms with battery backup. Wired into your home’s electrical system and linked together so they all sound as one, with a battery backup that keeps them working during an outage. This is the gold standard, and it’s typically what’s required for new construction and many remodels.
  • Battery-only alarms, including 10-year sealed-battery units. Better than nothing and easy to add, but they don’t interconnect the way a hardwired system does.

Generators and carbon monoxide

This one is worth its own mention, because it’s a common and preventable danger. Portable generators are a leading cause of carbon monoxide poisoning, they must always run outdoors, well away from doors and windows, never in a garage or enclosed space.
