Grounding vs. bonding, in plain language

These two terms get used together, but they do different jobs:

  • Grounding gives fault current a safe, low-resistance path back to the source and into the earth. If something goes wrong, grounding is what carries that energy away so a breaker trips, instead of leaving a metal appliance frame or box energized and dangerous to touch.
  • Bonding connects all the metal parts of your system, panels, conduit, equipment enclosures, and metal water and gas piping, together so they share the same electrical potential. That prevents a dangerous voltage difference between, say, a metal sink and a metal appliance, and makes fault paths predictable.

The key thing to understand: your GFCIs, AFCIs, surge protectors, and breakers are all designed assuming the grounding and bonding are correct. Get that foundation wrong, and those safety devices can’t fully do their jobs.

Why older Alaska homes often have grounding issues

Grounding problems are common in older housing stock, here and everywhere. Homes built before grounded receptacles became standard often have two-prong outlets with no equipment ground at all, or, just as concerning, three-prong outlets that were swapped in without a real ground behind them, so they look modern but aren’t actually grounded. Grounds also get disconnected or left un-extended during past remodels and DIY work.

Alaska has adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code, but code applies to new and upgraded work, older installations can stay in service until they’re changed. That’s why plenty of Mat-Su homes still have ungrounded or only partially grounded circuits running the electronics and appliances we rely on today.
