GFCI protection and bathroom code

Because a bathroom is a wet location, ground-fault protection isn’t optional, it’s what keeps a plugged-in hair dryer or shaver from becoming a shock hazard near water. Code requires GFCI protection for bathroom receptacles, and specifically for any receptacle within six feet of the outside edge of a tub or shower. In practice, that means every outlet in your bathroom should be GFCI-protected.

There are two ways to provide that protection, a GFCI receptacle at the outlet itself, or a GFCI breaker at the panel that protects the whole circuit. Both are valid; we use whichever fits your remodel best and make sure it’s installed correctly so it actually does its job.

Dedicated circuits for bathroom loads

Bathrooms ask more of their wiring than people expect. Code calls for at least one dedicated 20-amp circuit serving the bathroom receptacles, enough to run a hair dryer or a small space heater without tripping a breaker. Beyond that, a well-planned remodel often separates the bigger loads onto their own circuits:

• Vanity lighting on its own lighting circuit.
• Exhaust fans and fan/heater combination units.
• Heated floors, which draw steady power and are best on a dedicated, protected circuit.

Planning these circuits during the remodel, rather than overloading an existing one, is what prevents tripping breakers and safety issues down the road.

Exhaust fan and heater wiring

A good exhaust fan does more than clear steam, in our climate it’s key to controlling the moisture that leads to mold and damage. During a remodel we wire in a properly sized fan, and many Mat-Su homeowners choose a combination fan/heater unit for a little extra warmth on a cold morning. Those combo units draw more power and need the right circuit and switching, which we size and install correctly. Heated floors

Warm tile underfoot is one of the great luxuries in an Alaska bathroom, and electric radiant floor heating makes it possible. We handle the electrical side of a heated-floor install: a dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit and the thermostat that controls it, coordinating with your tile or flooring installer who sets the heating mat under the floor. Done right, it’s a safe, energy-efficient way to take the chill off the coldest mornings.

Bathroom lighting design

Good bathroom lighting is layered and purposeful. Vanity lighting placed at the right height keeps shadows off your face at the mirror, where you actually need to see. Recessed fixtures add overall brightness, and any fixture in or near a shower has to be rated for damp or wet locations for safety. Add dimmers, and the same bathroom goes from bright and functional in the morning to calm and relaxing at night. A remodel is the ideal time to build this in.

Process and coordination

On a bathroom remodel, the electrical has to be sequenced with the rest of the work:

1. Planning and circuit layout, mapping the outlets, lighting, fan, heat, and any heated floor to your design.
2. Rough-in wiring, running the circuits before the walls and floor are closed up.
3. Inspection, confirming the rough wiring meets code while it’s still accessible.
4. Trim-out, installing and connecting the fixtures, outlets, fan, and controls once finishes are in.

Can I add a heated floor to an existing bathroom?

Often yes, especially if you’re already retiling. The heating element goes in with the new floor, and we provide the dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit and thermostat to run it. It’s easiest to plan as part of a remodel, when the floor is open.

Why does my bathroom need its own dedicated circuit?
