Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are the least expensive life-safety devices in your home, and the most important. They’re what wakes your family in a fire and what warns you about a gas you can’t see, smell, or taste. AK Sparky’s Electric installs hardwired, interconnected smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for homes across Wasilla, Palmer, and the greater Mat-Su Valley, as licensed, bonded, and insured electricians. Because coming home safely to our family each day is what matters most, and we want the same for yours.
Our climate raises the stakes. Homes here are built and sealed tight against the cold, which is great for heat but means combustion byproducts have nowhere to escape. We heat with fuel-burning appliances, park vehicles in attached garages, and increasingly run backup generators through long winter outages, all sources of carbon monoxide. And our long, dark winters mean more hours at home with the heat running. Working alarms aren’t a formality here; they’re the difference between a close call and a tragedy.
Alaska law (statute AS 18.70.095) sets clear requirements:
In plain terms: nearly every Mat-Su home needs both. If you heat with oil, gas, or wood, or have an attached garage, you’re a qualifying dwelling that needs CO protection.
Placement is what makes detectors effective. Following standard fire-safety guidance, smoke alarms should be installed:
Carbon monoxide alarms should be placed outside sleeping areas and on each level as well. And the single biggest upgrade you can make is interconnection, so that when one alarm senses danger, they all sound at once, giving everyone in the house time to get out no matter where the threat starts.
There are two basic approaches:
As electricians, we install and interconnect hardwired systems properly, and we’ll help you choose the right combination smoke/CO units for each location in your home.
This one is worth its own mention, because it’s a common and preventable danger. Portable generators are a leading cause of carbon monoxide poisoning, they must always run outdoors, well away from doors and windows, never in a garage or enclosed space. A permanently installed standby generator is vented outdoors by design, which is one of its safety advantages. Either way, working CO alarms are your backstop. If backup power is on your mind, see our backup generator services, and make sure your CO protection is current before the next outage.
Are smoke and CO detectors required by law in Alaska?
Yes. Under Alaska statute AS 18.70.095, smoke detection is required in all dwellings, and carbon monoxide detection is required in qualifying dwellings, those with a fuel-burning appliance, an attached garage or carport, or an adjacent parking space. That covers nearly every Mat-Su home.
Where should smoke and CO detectors be installed?
Smoke alarms belong inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. CO alarms should be outside sleeping areas and on each level. Interconnecting them so they all sound together is strongly recommended.
Should I get hardwired or battery detectors?
Hardwired, interconnected alarms with battery backup are the most reliable and are typically required for new construction and remodels. Battery-only alarms are a reasonable add-on, but they don’t interconnect like a hardwired system. We can install and link a proper hardwired system.
Do I need a CO detector if I have a generator or gas appliances?
Yes, and it’s exactly the situation the law targets. Any home with a fuel-burning appliance, or that runs a generator, has a real CO risk. A working CO alarm is inexpensive protection against a gas you can’t detect on your own.
Don’t leave your family’s safety to a chirping battery alarm nobody’s sure still works. Call AK Sparky’s Electric at 907-671-9288 or schedule online, and a licensed residential electrician will install and interconnect smoke and CO protection that does its job when it counts.
